Mt Nemo is under attack, yet again, from a mining company planning to profit from the blasting of TWO new open-pit mines in land that is designated an UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Open-pit mining is one of THE most destructive industrial practices on the planet. We are working against this very bad idea every day, striving to protect our piece of the planet (which is all any of us can do). Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Story
CORE Burlington, in partnership with Small Change Fund, is fighting Nelson Aggregates’ plan to significantly increase its open-pit gravel mine on Mount Nemo, in Burlington’s precious greenbelt lands. We’re standing on the brim of our sixth year battling this blasted quarry. We’re preparing for the end-game which begins on March 4, 2025. That’s the starting date for an Ontario Land Tribunal hearing where the final decision—‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Nelson’s application to blast a mega-quarry out of the heart of Mount Nemo—will finally be decided.
We’ve been fundraising non-stop since March 2020. During that time, we’ve raised significant funds which have paid for the essential scientific and legal research needed to build the case for protecting Mount Nemo from the permanently destructive industrial degradations of gravel mining.
We’re at the finish line of our fundraising marathon but we still need to raise another $50K to pay for the team of lawyers and experts that will stand up for Mount Nemo at the fast-approaching OLT hearing. Please help us win our David-and-Goliath battle with this deep-pocketed, multi-national corporation. Every dollar counts. Every dollar encourages.

Mount Nemo’s beautiful escarpment lands are a green oasis set amidst the urban concrete of the GTHA. We must protect this oasis for ourselves and for coming generations—let’s stop Nelson Aggregate from blasting it into an irredeemable lunar landscape.
